Diabetes is one of the leading causes of mortality and morbidity in Pakistan. According to world statistics in 2011, there were an estimated 366 million people with diabetes (8.3% of the world’s population) By 2030, the prevalence is projected to rise to 522 million (9.9%). Each year, approximately 78,000 children develop Type 1 diabetes.

In 2010 Pakistan was 7th leading country in terms of diabetes population while in 2030, Pakistan is projected to be 4th leading country.

Lack of proper screening, late diagnosis, lack of education about prevention and self-management are some of the reasons for uncontrolled epidemic of diabetes in Pakistan.

Death Rates

Diabetes is the cause of 88,000 deaths per day.

Death can be due to heart attack or stroke that is more prevalent in diabetic population or it can be due to complications of diabetes like renal failure or life threatening infections.

Heart Disease And Stroke

Risk of heart attack and stroke is 2-4 times higher in diabetic patients as compared to normal population Heart disease in women with diabetes is 23% more than women without diabetes.

End Stage Kidney Disease (ESRD)

101,145 people with ESRD due to diabetes are on dialysis and need kidney transplant.

Leg Amputations

60% of non-traumatic amputations are due to diabetes. This is 15-40 times greater than normal population.

Blindness

Diabetic retinopathy is a leading cause of blindness in adults aged 20-74 years.
28.5% people with diabetes over 40 years have diabetic retinopathy.
